Catch-Up

We have our passports! As of 10:o0 this morning, our passports, complete with Chinese and Russian Visas were delivered. They’re weeks later than expected, and we originally intended to fly to Ireland 6 days ago, but I’m sure it’s not the last delay we’ll experience so we’re just trying to roll with it. We fly out Thursday evening, arriving in Dublin Friday morning!

If you check our Flickr photosets, you’ll see several days of photos that we haven’t mentioned yet – we’re still working out exactly how much to write down and post on a regular basis; every little thing in brief posts, or more thoughtfully composed and (potentially) more interesting posts with less frequency, with the occasional quick post thrown in. Who can say? In anycase, as we prepare to flee the country, here’s a quick update on the last few days.

Estes Park, Colorado

Dave, Cheri, Alex and Sean took us for a day trip over to Estes Park. We had a great time wandering around the downtown, found an awesome pinball arcade,  and checked out The Stanley Hotel (pictured ab0ve). Created by the steam-power magnate F.O. Stanley in 1909 and supposedly haunted, the hotel has been host to a number of Hollywood celebrities and foreign dignitaries and was the inspiration for Steven King’s The Shining. The hotel actually plays The Shining on a continuous loop on channel 42 in the guest rooms… creepy. Day’s photos are here.

Dirtbiking at Rampart

While Anjel finished her last day at the Gabriel Foundation, Dave and I ducked out for a quick morning’s ride. It’s been a while since I’ve been out on the dirt, so the first 5 minutes felt like I was riding on marbles, but after that it was AWESOME! The bikes and gear were provided by Dave, which is why I was wearing gear so old that it’s now back in style (go 80’s!). Full day’s photos are here.

Cubs Game at Wrigley!

DSCN3013

As soon as we originally decided to stop in Chicago, I started checking the schedule to make sure there would be at least one home game while we were there. Neither of us had ever been to Wrigley Field before and it was fantastic! We showed up 3 hours before game time to wander around the neighborhood. Unfortunately it was pouring rain so we just had a couple of drinks at Cubby Bear’s then wandered around the stadium as soon as the gates opened. The rain cleared, Mark met us there and the Cubs won. We even got free Cubs hats and our picture taken by one of the wandering photographers. Beat that. Full day’s photos are here.

Movies in the Park: Tootsie

DSCN2983

We were lucky enough to catch the last date of Chicago’s series of free movies in Grant Park. We also spent the entire day before the movie wandering the city, checking out the library and free museums. Full set of bumming around Chicago Photos here.

Chicago Architectural Tour

DSCN3085

Highly recomended and well worth it. The architecture of Chicago is amazing and this 90 minute tour does a great job of covering the history of the city and background of the buildings along the river. Full photos are here (probably not as interesting without the background though)

Roller Derby + Blues

DSCN3134

There were a couple other activities in there, but we’ll wrap up this list with our night out that started with a Roller Derby bout between Chicago’s Windy City Rollers and Charm City and ended well into the morning at the Kingston Mines, a famous Chicago blues club. A fantastic night indeed!
